Destin Area Hurricane Information The Destin - Fort Walton Beach area is occasionally threatened by hurricanes and tropical storms. The Atlantic hurricane seasons lasts from June to November, although we rarely have any significant storms before September and all of the major storms that have affected our area in recent history have been September or later. Over the last 100 years, the only significant storm to hit Destin prior to September was a category 1 storm that made a direct hit on Destin on July 31, 1936. It is important for guests planning a trip in late August through November n to keep an eye on tropical weather, so you will have time to prepare if a hurricane does come our way. The most dangerous aspects of a hurricane are the storm surge (how far inland the waters will come) and the powerful winds. In the case that a hurricane does come our way during your vacation, you should stay tuned to emergency broadcast television stations or radio stations for evacuation instructions. When a storm is threatening to strike the Gulf Coast, authorities will usually issue a volunteer evacuation or a mandatory evacuation. Volunteer means that it would probably be in your best interest to leave, but its not required. A mandatory evacuation means you must leave. Hurricane Terminology you will want to be familiar with:
